Helps Prevent Muscle Loss as You Age

Being active becomes even more crucial as we mature. A middle-aged adult will lose an average of 3 percent of their muscle mass annually. (2) This degenerative loss of muscle mass is known as sarcopenia. (The exact interpretation of sarcopenia is “loss of flesh.”) Sarcopenia is a “use it or lose it” circumstance.

If you don’t test your muscles to get stronger, they will one day degenerate. Living a sedentary lifestyle increases your risk of having sarcopenia. This loss of muscle includes diminished quality of muscle tissue, strength, and flexibility. (3)

Helps Prevent Osteoporosis and Builds Bone Density

For women, weekly strength training becomes even more important. Women naturally have smaller, slimmer bones than men; and at the age of 30, women’s bone density peaks. As women mature, estrogen levels decrease, resulting in further reduced bone strength, (4) which can result in osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a disease that lessens the quality and mass of your bones. (The actual interpretation of osteoporosis is “porous bone.”) Bones are just like your muscles–if you don’t push your bones to get stronger, they become delicate.

But the good news is, strength training builds bone density and develops strong muscles! Frequent strength training, in addition with a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet, can help stop osteoporosis and cope with sarcopenia–and in some cases, even reverse it! (5)
